| When the whole system is connected as it should be.. with coolant etc.. The cylinder pressures bleed into the coolant system, causing them to be very tight/hard when you try to squeeze them.. You have to do this when the engine is cold though.. because once it warms up, the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow through them freely, making them feel tight. A proper test is a pressure test, and compression test though.. I was just trying to give you a "quick way" to get it narrowed down faster.
